The Big Bertha style club is one of the most well known and popular of all the Callaway golf clubs on the market. The club got its name not from an actual woman named Bertha, but from a very heavy artillery machine developed by the Germans for use during World War I. Because of the power and force of the machine, the name became synonymous with propelling objects (originally artillery) quite far. This made it an ideal name for the golf clubs in the Callaway line.
The original Callaway Big Bertha, which came out in 1991, was one of the first drivers made of stainless steel as its main component. It also had a larger head than was typically used for a driver. Now, the Big Bertha line contains titanium clubs, also, and has expanded into the irons and fairway woods, and even a line of golf balls.
